The army moved into town about three days after we left. The first thing they did was close all businesses. They took over all three hotels and nailed the saloons shut. The Major in charge of the expedition took over the town hall and kicked out the mayor and his staff. The soldiers went door-to-door collecting weapons. I guess the constitution doesn’t apply here. They arrested several citizens including Candice. Just before they took them away the major said they will not stand for anyone working against the cause. Their job was to pacify the Indians, he felt that meant whipping them out.
After being locked up for three days Candice was released. She was brought to the town hall. Inside she met the general taking command of this action. He is a man named Gerald Lewis. He said, “that’s General Lewis.” He told her the Major overstepped his bounds in taking over the town. He was ordered to arrange their quartering. He then said, “I am deeply sorry about your shop and the damage.” Outside the window she could see her print shop. The front of it was gone and the press was in pieces in the street. A loud explosion they heard in their second night in jail was the sound of everything she owned being blown to bits.
He let her go then had a soldier follow her. He wasn’t subtle about it. He made is presence known. After a while she realized this guy was there to tell people without saying a word that they shouldn’t help her. Her business was gone and with that so was her home. Like hers the chiefs shop was destroyed. She had a small room in the back of the shop that was not touched by the explosion. She could stay there for now.
In the morning, there was a commotion. A soldier came in and grabbed her out of her bed. She was in just a long men’s shirt. He dragged her out into the street. As he did her shirt ripped open exposing her breasts. This seemed to rile up the crowd of soldiers. One of them kicked her in the ass. Then another pushed her down. as he did her shirt finished ripping exposing her naked form. A gun fired. It was the Major. He walked over and helped Candice up. He didn’t offer anything to cover herself up. Using a set of handcuffs, he bound her then brought her to the general.
With her arms behind her the shirt was open and she was exposed. General Lewis looked her up and down. he said to his Major, “that will be all for now.” He left the cuffs on her. He walked up to her and said, “I’ll give you one chance. Where is your mayor.” She had no idea. She told him that after she was release she went straight to her business. She hadn’t spoke to the mayor in almost a week. Instead of slapping her he opened her shirt up a little more and grabbed her left breast. He said, “in the war I was able to have many of your southern bells. Some of whom even did it willingly.” It was clear what he meant. He turned her around and pushed her face first onto the desk. He then ripped a seam in the back of the shirt exposing her backside. She could hear him undoing his belt. Just outside the office came a voice, “general there is a messenger from Washington here with a message.” The general looked at her ass then the door and back to her ass. He said, “we will pick this back up were we left off just as soon as I get back.”
After the general left the person at the door came in. he uncuffed Candice then offered her some clothing he had with him. It was Phillip one of the mayor’s sons. He said, “we have to go now. There is no messenger I just needed to get you out of here.” He turned his back while she dressed. She said, “don’t worry about that it’s not like you haven’t already seen it all.” Just before they left she grabbed the general’s sidearm. He left it in a holster on a hook by the door. It was a single action Colt with a pearl handle. Engraved in the barrel was “for my love.”
As the town erupted in chaos the two made it out-of-town. She said she would have loved to see the general’s face when he saw his prize gun was gone. They met up with Apple just outside of town. He had three horses for them. From there they road for about three hours into the territory. It would take the army a few hours to muster up and pursue. They then broke from the trail and went deeper into the wild. Hopefully the army won’t be able to follow. By nightfall they met up with us. After hearing what happened, I wanted to go back and attack. The chief had other plans.
The mayor was on the way with some of the other citizens to speak directly to the territorial government. He figured that they didn’t know the truth. Or that this general was operating outside of the constitution in a way that says he wants to run the territory. It’s one thing to threaten a civilian it’s another to threaten a politician’s job. With any luck, they will be able to speak with the governor and have this guy replaced. The trouble was this could take weeks if not months. We will need to hold out until then.
That night with all the drama happening back at the town we made camp and built a fire. I know it’s not very bright to set a fire when you are on the run. The way we figure the army won’t venture to far from the town until they establish themselves there. We passed around bottles of a Mexican liquor name Tequila. One man gave Candice a sort of mushroom. She ate it before the chief could stop her. He said to me, “ok then, she is going to have a very interesting night. You may want to stay near her just in case.” I asked, “what do you mean?” He said, “some people eat that so they can have visions others just for the feeling.”
As the group became a party some instruments came out. People started to play music. It wasn’t a song per say it was more of a long attempt to have all of them play the same thing. As they found a rhythm Candice started to dance. Well, maybe it could be called dancing. She was in her favorite type of dress, boots that were just a little too big for her and a brown derby. As she went back and forth she brought up her knees and tossed her hands in the air. The people without instruments started to clap. Just outside of the camp a group of Apache watched. One of the warriors said to another, “white people.” The music came to a head she stopped with her arms outstretched to the sky. The look on her face was of wonder and frightened some of the big strong men. She then yelled at the top of her voice “BUNNIES.” Then she passed out.
